House Mouse – Connecticut Identification & Behavior Guide

The house mouse is the most common rodent found inside Connecticut homes. Small, adaptable, and capable of squeezing through a ¼-inch gap, this species thrives around people and can establish a nesting site inside a home within days. In Hartford County, house mice are active year-round, with heavy indoor pressure during fall and winter.

Identification:

  • Size: 2.5–3.5 inches (body), thin tail roughly the same length
  • Color: Gray or light brown with a lighter belly
  • Ears: Large and prominent
  • Droppings: Small (⅛ inch), pointed at the ends
  • Behavior: Nocturnal, fast runners, excellent climbers

Their small size and flexible skeleton allow them to enter through cracks in foundations, doors, utility lines, and siding gaps.

Behavior & Activity Patterns:

House mice are incredibly prolific:

  • Breeding cycle: Every 19–21 days
  • Litter size: 5–6 pups
  • Litters per year: 6–10

A single female can produce 60+ offspring annually, which explains how infestations grow quickly.

Mice search for:

  • Warm nesting sites
  • Food crumbs
  • Pet food
  • Insulation and soft materials

Scratching is most noticeable between 2 AM and 6 AM, when mice are most active.

Why They Invade Connecticut Homes:

  • Cold fall temperatures
  • Older home construction with small gaps
  • High moisture basements
  • Easy food access
  • Nearby woods or fields

From October to March, indoor mouse activity in Connecticut peaks dramatically.

Health & Property Risks:

  • Droppings and urine contaminate food
  • Allergens can trigger asthma
  • Chewing on wiring can cause electrical fires
  • Can carry fleas and mites

When to Call a Professional:

If you hear scratching, find droppings, or see mice in daylight, professional control is needed. DIY methods rarely stop a breeding cycle.
