Pavement Ant – Connecticut Identification & Behavior Guide

Pavement ants are one of the most common nuisance ants in Connecticut homes. Known for building small sand “mounds” in cracks of sidewalks and driveways, they frequently enter kitchens in search of sugary foods and grease.

Identification:

  • Size: 1/8 inch
  • Color: Brown to black
  • Legs: Light brown
  • Distinct grooves on head and thorax

Often form long lines trailing to food sources.

Behavior & Habitat:

They nest:

  • Under driveways
  • Beneath stones
  • Inside wall voids
  • Under baseboards
  • Around foundations

They enter homes during temperature spikes or after rain.
